The headquarters of Palazzo Caracciolo di Avellino, a sixteenth century building located in the heart of the historical centre of Naples, makes the most charming setting for Fondazione Morra Greco. The foundation was established in 2003 by dentist Maurizio Morra Greco and publicly opened in 2006 with a commission by Gregor Schneider, who transformed the foundation’s cellar into a dark labyrinth.

The foundation is based around Collezione Morra Greco, which began in the 1990’s and now amounts to over a thousand works by around two hundred contemporary artists. With an eclectic, playful and rather theatrical mix, some positions include Kai Althoff, Candice Breitz, Nan Goldin, Mark Leckley, Catherine Sullivan, Urs Fischer and Thomas Zipp. Devotion to its locality also defines the foundation, and it initiates constant dialogue between its art, place and people. For example there is a residency program, where the exhibiting artists are invited to develop new projects that directly result from both their experience in Naples and their relation to the exhibition spaces of Palazzo Caracciolo di Avellino. Further, the public square located in front of the Palazzo is also used as a site for public exhibitions and events, highlighting the symbiosis between the foundation and the city and the social impact of this relationship. There are also workshops in order to promote cultural regeneration and educational opportunities within the local community.

Last year (2019), Fondazione Morra Greco made a fresh new opening to the public, with both reinvented Palazzo and additional exhibition spaces after four years of renovation, restoration and renewal. The programme is further enriched and continues its multidisciplinary approach with a number of presentations, lectures, screenings.

In their debut Collection Feature with IC, we share following documentation images of the opening show in the relaunched space. The exhibition included three parts, showing Jimmie Durham, Peter Bartoš and the first of a series of collection hangs, with Henrik Håkansson. The collection will continue to be exhibited in Naples, through curatorial paths or individual focuses, alongside the program of residencies and new productions introduced by Fondazione Morra Greco.
