Shanghai Night

Located in the four-story karaoke bar Shanghai Night, in the southwest part of the city, lives a uniquely displayed collection of both Chinese and international art.

The owner of this collection, Qiao Zhibing, started to collect art because of a simple need to decorate the nightclubs that he owns in Shanghai and Beijing. What initially began as a way to create an artistic ambience on the walls of the clubs, quickly developed into a deeper interest for the passion of collecting contemporary art, with Zhibing ultimately acquiring works by Chinese contemporaries such as Zhang Enli and Liu Wei, as well as internationally known including Antony Gormley, Olafur Eliasson, Sterling Ruby, Thomas Houseago, and Theaster Gates. Before he knew it, the once bare walls of the clubs were adorned with contemporary artworks belonging to a collection that was not yet fully realized.

In addition to Shanghai Night, Qiao Zhibing recently opened another project space in Shanghai dedicated to showcasing his own collection as well as exhibiting solo shows of both Chinese and International artists. The launch of the new space in September 2015 began with a solo exhibition of the Polish artist Wilhelm Sasnal.

In 2017 Zhibing will complete the construction of his own art center, located on the Westbund of Shangai, next to the Long Museum.

Contemporary art has brought me a lot. It enhances my appreciation for arts and it guides me to know more about the world. It brightens my mind and broadens my vision in work. I wish to introduce it to more people and let it benefit more people.
