BMWBMW is a cutting-edge carmaker. BMW is also a company with a long history in the arts. In 1975 they have started their art car series, involving, among others, Andy Warhol and Olafur Eliasson, which gives them probably the longest active participation in the arts of every other carmaker in the world. The company’s dedication for contemporary art, music, design and architecture led them to sponsor well over 100 cultural formats spanning the entire globe. As far as collecting goes, they were smart enough to commission the young Gerhard Richter as early as 1972 to create three major pieces for their new headquarters’ lobby – by now surely the most valuable corporate entrance worldwide.
It doesn't stop there: BMW is keeping a close lock on the arts, with advertising projects they have done in collaboration with contemporary artists, with sponsoring major art prices and with their brand being a common sight at international art fairs for years.
The month of May 2009 marks a further step in the direction of art enthusiasm for BMW. The carmaker joined forces with Independent Collectors as the first Global Partner.
Our shared main objective: To create valuable content for collectors and afficionados of contemporary art.
It is a new evolutionary phase of partnership we are aiming at. It isn't based on an advertising deal, but on a shared passion for substance, relevance and – maybe most importantly – for joy (to borrow one of the carmaker's core values). From our point of view it makes perfect sense to join forces with BMW and we are looking forward to fill our partnership with life.
