Independent Collectors
Working Hard for Art
An art consultant and curator by day, the Brooklyn-based Collector is a self proclaimed “gutsy newcomer”, working with emerging artists to help her push her collection further.

We invited the Lyn del Sol to share her ever-growing collection and to tell us about how she fell into the world of collecting.
“I never quite set out to collect art, but rather found myself collaborating with artists and as a result became a caretaker of art. For just under a decade I ran an organization called Creative Thriftshop based in New York City and it was during that time I came in contact with hundreds of emerging artists from all over the world.
The newly globalized art market, brought about by the Internet and the art fair movement, fostered increasingly gutsy newcomers. I myself identified as one such gutsy newcomer. As a result, the collection I amassed reflects this period of growth and fervor in the art world. I’m fortunate that so many of the artists I’ve worked with over the years have gifted me some truly choice pieces. Having been born from artists’ generosity, I find the collection to reflect an artist’s perspective, which can be bitingly meta at times.
These early acquisitions still inform my collection as it continues to grow and go through constant flux. I just recently began to inventory it all, reconsidering its exhibition and framing, not to mention how I might fill in the holes with new works. As I continue to work as an art consultant and curator, a lot of the art I encounter and work with professionally is governed by what’s right for my clients. With my own personal collection I relish the lack of rules. I’m able to take big risks, fall hard in love, and place beautiful, curious things together in unexpected ways. Collecting is personal for me. It’s the reward for working hard for art.”
