Lyon Housemuseum 2017

If collecting is about the bond between artwork and collector, then the Lyon Housemuseum is the result of when art and life merge together.

If collecting is about the bond between artwork and collector, then the Lyon Housemuseum is a fine example of the result when art and life merge together as one.

Built by the architect and collector Corbett Lyon, the Lyon Housemuseum doubles up as the collector couples home as well as functioning as a museum (the clue is in the name). What began in 1994, Corbett Lyon and his wife Yueji Lyon, have continually added to their collection over the years and as a result now have one of Australia’s most important private collections that features seminal works by many of the countries most famed contemporary artists.

In addition to buying works in support of Australia’s contemporary art, the Lyons have also envisioned that the collection would be there to make works available for public viewing, as well as for research and education. The collection itself currently 350 works from over fifty Australian artists such as Emily Floyd, Daniel Crooks and Howard Arkley. Ever the pioneers, twenty years ago the Lyon’s changed direction of the collection and decided to only collect works from a new generation, resulting them now owning pieces by internationally renowned names such as Brook Andrews, Patricia Piccinini, Callum Morton and Shaun Gladwell.

In their first Online Exhibition on IC, we present views from inside the Lyon Housemuseum.
