Jump into the Future

In the second-largest donation in the history of the Stedelijk Museum, the Borgmann Collection goes on public display in an exhibition that captures artworks made in a momentous decade.

Focusing on the art scene in Cologne, with connections to London, New York and Los Angeles, the Borgmann donation is a gift of extensive significance, consisting of 217 works and completely filling the entire thirty rooms found on the first-floor of the Stedelijk.

Featuring works by Cosima von Bonin, Matt Mullican, Lucy McKenzie, Jutta Koether, Paulina Olowska, Wolfgang Tillmans, Christopher Williams, Cerith Wyn Evans and Heimo Zobernig, “Jump into the Future – Art from the 90’s and 2000’s”, casts reflection on a specific time when everything shifted. Bookmarked by the fall of the Berlin wall and the September 11 attacks, and with the Yugoslav Wars and conflicts in the Middle East also occupying the decade, this era also marks the age of the digital revolution, forever changing our relationship with technology.

Born in Hamburg in 1942, Thomas Borgmann is a prolific art collector and gallery owner, with a keen eye for classic moderns and a thirst for contemporary artistic methods. It is with this passion for discovering innovative works that the title of the exhibition was born, with Borgmann describing his visits the Stedelijk in the 1960s “an escape into the future” – a sentiment that is evidently seen in his attitude to collecting contemporary art.

In this online exhibition, we present works from the exhibition “Jump into the Future – Art from the 90’s and 2000’s. The Borgmann Donation” at the Stedelijk Museum.
