The Castello di Ama winery is renowned internationally as one of the world’s best, as well as the site of one of the most important contemporary collections of site-specific works of art.

The winery, established in 1972 and owned by Marco and Lorenza Pallanti, was the result of the passion of four Roman families, and boasts a total surface area of nearly 230 hectares, of which eighty are dedicated to vineyard cultivation and forty to olive trees, at an average altitude of 480 meters.

Built up from modest beginnings in 1999 and now curated by Philip Larratt-Smith, Castello di Ama’s collection of site-specific art today consist of works by thirteen world-class artists, each of whom has responded in their own way to the special spirit of the estate. This is art rooted in terroir – unique and unrepeatable, just like the wines, and following the rhythm of the harvests with one new installation commissioned each year.

The latest installation was constructed in October 2016 by Lee Ufan titled “Topos (Excavated)”. Here, Ufan transformed one of the wine cellars at Ama into an immersive installation that focuses on the relationship between the resonant context of the 14th century architecture and the visual language developed by the artist. Within a roughhewn stone vault, Lee has invented a dramatic installation that immerses you within the artwork.

In the first Online Exhibition from Castello di Ama, we present works from the permanent collection.
