“Mixed Media” marked the latest, and sadly final, exhibition at the Safn Berlin art space in a presentation of two artists who have close ties with the collection, Karin Sander and Dieter Roth.
With both Karin Sander and Dieter Roth spending a great deal of time in Iceland, stamping their mark on the countries artistic landscape and their involvement with Iceland’s Academy of the Arts, it was only a matter of time until they established a friendship with collectors Pétur Arason and Ragna Róbertsdóttir for Safn.
“Mixed Media”, curated by Katharina Wendler, presented a selection of works by both artists from the Safn collection as well as more recent works by Karin Sander. The latter included an artist book recently published by the Salon Verlag publishing house in Cologne, in its “ex libris” series that was directly based on Dieter Roth’s “Kinderbuch” [Children’s Book], published in 1957 in his own publishing house in Reykjavik.
Whilst their work in this exhibition may appear different from one another at first glance, it is their use of everyday materials in the work which ultimately links the two artists, as well as their individual search to make discoveries and new beginnings in their practice.
