Sandwiched between Art Brussels and the Venice Biennale, this weekend sees Gallery Weekend Berlin celebrates its eleventh edition.

Made up of 47 participating galleries and many more unofficial openings and events popping up around the city, we asked a number collectors – all can be found within the third BMW Art Guide by Independent Collectors – what their Gallery Weekend Berlin tips were and what they are not going to miss.

Which galleries/spaces will be on your list?

ANDREA VON GOETZ

On Thursday I will attend the opening from Philipp Fürhofer at the Gallery Juerg Judin, he is a great artist and the show will be really good.

Then on Friday I will go with a group of collectors to NGORONGORO Artist Weekend in Weißensee where 120 different artist show their work. After that a will take a look at Marcel van Eden at Gallery Kromus + Zink, the new EIGEN + ART Lab, and then Galerie Kicken where they will present work by Helmut Newton.

Who throws the best parties in the city, and which ones will you be attending this year?

ANDREA VON GOETZ

If you want a real artist place to party: the studio ground of Jonas Burgert on Thursday evening. My favorite place to go for good drinks is Pauly Saal.

Where do you go to refresh and get a bite to eat in the midst of Gallery Weekend madness?

ANDREA VON GOETZ

The roof top at the Soho House is a good place to relax or the hafenküche to enjoy a moment without art.

HEINER WEMHÖNER

On Friday May 1st we are celebrating my companies’ 90th anniversary in Herford, so this years Gallery Weekend will be a little bit shorter for me. However, I will be coming to Berlin on Saturday and I’m very keen to see Erik van Lieshouts show at Guido Baudach and William Tucker at Buchmann. Richard Mosse at calier | gebauer, Gregor Hildebrand at Wentrup and Ida Ekblad and Navid Nuur at Max Hetzler are definitely worth seeing, I think. Visiting Johann Königs renovated St. Agnes church with exhibitions by Katharina Grosse and Jeppe Hein is also on my list.

IC

Are there any other events or after parties you will be attending?

HEINER WEMHÖNER

I will attend the launch of the new BMW Art Guide by Independent Collectors at Soho House and will visit Dr. Thomas Rusches private collection before. I’m also especially looking forward to see the exhibition NGORONGORO in Weissensee where the works of seven artists I’m collecting are presented.

On Saturday night there’s the Gallery Weekend’s gala dinner. But to be honest I’m also happy to enjoy some quiet minutes and a good glass of wine with some of my artist friends at my new flat in Mitte.

I love to go to the terrace at Soho House and sit by the pool. And for food, the typical German restaurant Lutter & Wegner for some quiet times.
